*Content Description:
Health Level Seven (HL7) is a set of standards that enables the transfer of healthcare data amongst disparate software systems. The original standard was created over 30 years ago and is in widespread use across healthcare systems, but it has begun to show its age with modern computer systems. The newest version, known as Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), is a complete redesign which significantly expands its ability to connect with modern systems as it is based upon standards and processes that power the modern Internet including REST APIs (Representational State Transfer Application Programming Interfaces). As such, it has the ability to facilitate innovation by streamlining the ability to make different systems communicate with each other and speed up development. In radiology, FHIR has many use cases, and several will be explored in this exhibit. FHIR has the ability to rapidly make necessary clinical data available to the radiologist in order to improve quality of care and increase efficiency. The overall goal of this exhibit is to give radiologists an understanding and familiarity with FHIR and how it can spur innovation and enhance efficiency in all facets of radiology.
